How do I calculate the volume of an irregular pond?
Use average length, average width and average depth in metres, multiply them together, then multiply by 1000 for litres. For a free-form shape, multiply the result by about 0.85 to allow for the curved outline.
How deep should a pond be in Australia?
At least 60 cm, and preferably 90 cm or more where koi or goldfish are kept. Shallower ponds overheat badly in summer and lose a great deal of water to evaporation. Check council requirements before building.
How many fish can a pond hold?
A common guideline is one centimetre of adult fish length per 20-25 litres for goldfish, and considerably more space for koi, which reach 60 cm or more. Surface area matters as much as volume because ponds depend on surface gas exchange.
