Do fish grow to the size of their tank?
No. In an undersized tank, skeletal growth continues while internal organs are stunted by growth-inhibiting hormones and poor water quality. The fish looks smaller but is deformed and its lifespan is shortened. It is a welfare problem, not a size-management technique.
How fast do aquarium fish grow?
Most small community fish reach adult size within 6-12 months. Larger species take two to four years. Growth rate depends mainly on water quality and diet, then on temperature and available space.
How big does a common pleco get?
Around 45 cm, from the 5-6 cm juveniles usually sold. It needs a tank of at least 450 litres as an adult. Bristlenose plecos, which stay around 12 cm, are the appropriate choice for most home aquariums.
